This page is now closed. Thanks for joining us. These were the updates as Imane Khelif beat Yang Liu in the women’s 66kg boxing final at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Friday, August 9:
- Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, who was thrust into the centre of a dispute about her sex early on at the Paris Games, beat China’s Yang Liu to win gold in the women’s welterweight (66kg) category.
- Khelif dictated most of the first round from the centre of the ring and unloaded a flurry of punches on Yang two-thirds of the way through to take the early initiative. The second round started in the same way, with Khelif’s punches appearing to carry more snap, power and menace.
- The Algerian was ahead on all the judges’ scorecards heading into the third and final round, and she just needed to avoid serious trouble to claim gold. Yang tried to pressure her, but the Algerian remained in control, and after her comprehensive victory was confirmed, she was paraded around the arena on the shoulders of an Algerian team member.
- In the evening’s other bouts: Uzbekistan’s Asadkhuja Muydinkhujaev won men’s 71kg gold; China’s Wu Yu won women’s 50kg gold; and Uzbekistan’s Lazizbek Mullojonov won men’s 92kg gold.
