- A majority of justices on a five-member panel of Brazil’s Supreme Court voted on Thursday to convict former President Jair Bolsonaro of plotting a coup to stay in power, being part of an armed criminal organisation, and for three other charges related to alleged efforts to overturn his 2022 election loss.
- The votes mean the justices have the majority needed to convict Bolsonaro and seven alleged co-conspirators on all charges, with sentencing expected on Friday. He could face more than 40 years in prison.
- The Brazilian leader has vehemently denied he was involved in the plot and has called the proceedings a legal “witch-hunt”.
- One justice, Luiz Fux, voted to annul the case against the former leader, siding with the defence’s argument that the Supreme Court lacks jurisdiction because Bolsonaro is no longer in office.
