- Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, a suspect in an apparent assassination attempt targeting former US President Donald Trump, has been charged with federal gun crimes.
- Reportedly charged in 2002 with possessing a weapon of mass destruction, which is a felony in the US, Routh has been charged in the recent incident with carrying a firearm as a convicted felon and with possessing a firearm with an obliterated serial number.
- Routh was interviewed by multiple news outlets in Ukraine, where he had travelled to support its war effort in 2022.
- Secret Service and Homeland Security agents have searched Routh’s former home in Greensboro, North Carolina.
- The Secret Service had opened fire on a gunman on Sunday at the former president and Republican candidate’s golf resort in Florida. The FBI is investigating the incident.
- It comes some two months after Trump was shot during a rally in Pennsylvania, when a bullet grazed his ear, and seven weeks before the US’s November 5 presidential election.
