- India has voted in the seventh and last phase to decide the fate of 904 candidates competing for 57 seats as the staggered election that started in April came to a close.
- The first six phases of the mammoth vote were held on April 19, April 26, May 7, May 13, May 20, and May 25. The votes will be counted on June 4.
- The election primarily pits the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by two-time Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), against the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), spearheaded by the main opposition Indian National Congress party.
- There are about 969 million registered voters to elect 543 members of Lok Sabha, the lower house of parliament, in the world’s largest democratic exercise ever.
