- Donald Trump has been indicted for his wide-ranging attempts to overturn the US 2020 election – the third time the former president has been criminally charged.
- The four-count, 45-page indictment charges Trump with conspiring to defraud the US by preventing Congress from certifying Joe Biden’s victory and conspiring to deprive voters of their right to a fair election.
- Special Counsel Jack Smith, who led the investigation against the former president, said Trump spread “lies” about the 2020 election with the aim of “obstructing a bedrock function of the US government”.
- Trump, who is seeking the White House again in 2024, rejected the latest charges as “another fake indictment”.
- The former president was previously charged in New York state over allegations of falsifying business records, and federally over accusations of mishandling secret government documents. He has denied wrongdoing in all cases.
