As violence intensifies in Yemen’s southern port city of Aden, hundreds of families have taken shelter in the relative safety of al-Mukalla – despite the fact that the city was taken over earlier this month by al-Qaeda fighters.
The displaced families complain of long power cuts and inadequate water supplies, with humanitarian aid coming mostly from local charities and philanthropists.
Some residents of Somali origin have opted to sail back to their homeland as Yemen’s war continues. Others, who cannot afford the voyage, remain behind.
